SmartTrip Machine Locations

Articles

My first simple Google Map API product is a geocoding of the retail SmartTrip locations serving WMATA bus riders who aren’t using a Metrorail station on a daily basis. Given the general move to eventually end cash payment at bus stops (something WMATA is moving a lot slower on than other transit agencies), and the many regional bus services that use SmartTrip in the counties surrounding DC, it looks like we’re going to need a lot more of these for convenience to be a benefit.

It’s a little slow – the GMarker class is apparently designed with too many features to be used in mass quantities with decent performance, and it’s the built-in option when using GGeoXml to render a KML file. I’m currently exploring other options for future maps.
